Amsterdam Sights, Sounds and Hotels
Sint-Nikolaaskerk is the official, but never used, name for the late Gothic Oude Kerk, or Old Church. In 1566 the church was finally completed with the erection of the bell tower, after work had commenced on the church in 1250, but alas, a great deal of the Catholic decoration was destroyed by Protestant reformers in 1578. Organ recitals are a pleasure on the beautiful 1724 organ inside the church, and one would not realise that this wonderful old church is surrounded by the sweet gabled almshouses in which reside the meagrely clad woman of the Red Light District.
There really is something for everybody in the multi-faceted city of Amsterdam, and if you're interested in the finer things in life, then Amsterdam's Oude Kerk will definitely appeal to you. The you will discover too, that the splendid Amsterdam hotels also hold a special appeal.
