Prior to Bargello becoming an accolade of Italian Renaissance sculpture it served as the residence of the city’s chief magistrate during medieval times and later functioned as a prison and torture chamber. Today you can view, amoung works by many more famous sculptors, masterpieces by Michelangelo, Donatello, Cellini and Andrea del Verrocchio, as well as a diverse collection of arms and also of ceramics in this historic, bleak bastion of a palace.
